Al-Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله

الحسن البصري

يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ، إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ أَيَّامٌ، فَإِذَا ذَهَبَ يَوْمٌ ذَهَبَ بَعْضُكَ.

“O son of Adam, you are nothing but a collection of days. When one day goes, part of you has gone.”

Time is not something you possess — it is your life itself. A devastating reminder to spend every day in obedience.

الْمُؤْمِنُ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَالْأَسِيرِ يَسْعَى فِي فَكَاكِ رَقَبَتِهِ.

“The believer in this world is like a prisoner striving to free himself.”

The believer never becomes intoxicated by this world, because he knows it is temporary.

يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ، بِعْ دُنْيَاكَ بِآخِرَتِكَ تَرْبَحْهُمَا جَمِيعًا، وَلَا تَبِعْ آخِرَتَكَ بِدُنْيَاكَ فَتَخْسَرْهُمَا جَمِيعًا.

“O son of Adam, sell your worldly life for your Hereafter and you will gain both; but do not sell your Hereafter for your worldly life and lose both.”

Quintessential Hasan al-Basri: brutally direct, ascetic, focused on the final outcome.

Sufyan al-Thawri رحمه الله

سفيان الثوري

الْعِلْمُ يَهْتِفُ بِالْعَمَلِ، فَإِنْ أَجَابَهُ وَإِلَّا ارْتَحَلَ.

“Knowledge calls out for action. If action responds, it remains; otherwise, knowledge departs.”

One of the great principles of scholarship: knowledge that does not transform you becomes a proof against you.

مَا عَالَجْتُ شَيْئًا أَشَدَّ عَلَيَّ مِنْ نِيَّتِي، إِنَّهَا تَتَقَلَّبُ عَلَيَّ.

“I have never struggled with anything more difficult than my intention, for it keeps turning against me.”

Even a giant of the Salaf feared hidden changes in intention — ikhlas is the hardest battle.

مَا رَأَيْتُ شَيْئًا أَهْوَنَ مِنَ الْوَرَعِ، مَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ فَدَعْهُ.

“I have never seen anything easier than abstaining: whatever causes doubt in your heart, leave it.”

Wara' is not just avoiding the haram — it is the spiritual sensitivity to walk away from what corrupts the heart.

لَيْسَ الزُّهْدُ بِأَكْلِ الْغَلِيظِ وَلَا لُبْسِ الْعَبَاءِ، إِنَّمَا الزُّهْدُ قَصْرُ الْأَمَلِ.

“Asceticism is not eating coarse food or wearing rough clothing. Asceticism is shortening one's hopes.”

Zuhd is primarily a state of the heart, not an aesthetic.

Imam al-Shafi'i رحمه الله

الإمام الشافعي

شَكَوْتُ إِلَى وَكِيعٍ سُوءَ حِفْظِي فَأَرْشَدَنِي إِلَى تَرْكِ الْمَعَاصِي وَأَخْبَرَنِي بِأَنَّ الْعِلْمَ نُورٌ وَنُورُ اللهِ لَا يُهْدَى لِعَاصِي

“I complained to Waki' about my poor memory, so he advised me to abandon sins. Knowledge is light, and Allah's light is not given to a sinner.”

A famous and beautiful line — famously attributed to al-Shafi'i.

رَأْيِي صَوَابٌ يَحْتَمِلُ الْخَطَأَ، وَرَأْيُ غَيْرِي خَطَأٌ يَحْتَمِلُ الصَّوَابَ.

“My opinion is correct but may be wrong, and another person's opinion is wrong but may be correct.”

Scholarly humility — the hallmark of the true seekers of knowledge.

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله

ابن القيم

فِي الْقَلْبِ شَعَثٌ لَا يَلُمُّهُ إِلَّا الْإِقْبَالُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَفِيهِ وَحْشَةٌ لَا يُزِيلُهَا إِلَّا الْأُنْسُ بِهِ.

“In the heart is a scatteredness that nothing can gather except turning toward Allah; and in it is a loneliness that nothing can remove except intimacy with Him.”

One of the most profound descriptions of the human heart — its healing is in the Qur'an and dhikr.

الْقُلُوبُ لَا تَزَالُ فِي سَفَرٍ لَا يَنْقَطِعُ، إِمَّا إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَإِمَّا إِلَى النَّارِ.

“The hearts are continually on a journey that never stops — either toward Paradise or toward the Fire.”

Every day the heart is moving somewhere, even when the body appears stationary.

مَنْ أَرَادَ صَفَاءَ قَلْبِهِ فَلْيُؤْثِرِ اللهَ عَلَى شَهْوَتِهِ.

“Whoever wants purity of heart should give Allah priority over his desires.”

The heart is purified by preference — Allah above the self.

Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله

ابن تيمية

مَا يَصْنَعُ أَعْدَائِي بِي؟ أَنَا جَنَّتِي وَبُسْتَانِي فِي صَدْرِي، إِنْ رُحْتُ فَهِيَ مَعِي لَا تُفَارِقُنِي.

“What can my enemies do to me? My Paradise and my garden are in my heart. Wherever I go, it is with me and never leaves me.”

True contentment with Allah cannot be imprisoned by external circumstances.

بِالصَّبْرِ وَالْيَقِينِ تُنَالُ الْإِمَامَةُ فِي الدِّينِ.

“Through patience and certainty, leadership in religion is attained.”

Derived from Qur'an 32:24 — spiritual greatness requires both sabr and yaqin.

الذِّكْرُ لِلْقَلْبِ مِثْلُ الْمَاءِ لِلسَّمَكِ، فَكَيْفَ يَكُونُ حَالُ السَّمَكِ إِذَا فَارَقَ الْمَاءَ؟

“Dhikr for the heart is like water for a fish. What then would become of the fish if it were separated from the water?”

A vivid explanation of why the heart deteriorates without the remembrance of Allah.

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal رحمه الله

الإمام أحمد بن حنبل

النَّاسُ إِلَى الْعِلْمِ أَحْوَجُ مِنْهُمْ إِلَى الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ؛ لِأَنَّ الطَّعَامَ وَالشَّرَابَ يُحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْيَوْمِ مَرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ، وَالْعِلْمُ يُحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ بِعَدَدِ الْأَنْفَاسِ.

“People are more in need of knowledge than food and drink, because food is needed once or twice a day, while knowledge is needed with every breath.”

Knowledge is not an accessory to life — it is a necessity for the soul.

مَعَ الْمِحْبَرَةِ إِلَى الْمَقْبَرَةِ.

“With the inkpot all the way to the grave.”

The pursuit of knowledge never ends — not even at old age.

Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak رحمه الله

عبد الله بن المبارك

رُبَّ عَمَلٍ صَغِيرٍ تُعَظِّمُهُ النِّيَّةُ، وَرُبَّ عَمَلٍ كَبِيرٍ تُصَغِّرُهُ النِّيَّةُ.

“Perhaps a small deed is made great by its intention, and perhaps a great deed is made small by its intention.”

The enormous importance of ikhlas — the scale of deeds is weighed by the heart, not the eye.

Imam Malik رحمه الله

الإمام مالك

كُلٌّ يُؤْخَذُ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ وَيُرَدُّ إِلَّا صَاحِبَ هَذَا الْقَبْرِ.

“Everyone's statement may be accepted or rejected except the occupant of this grave.”

He pointed toward the grave of the Prophet ﷺ — no scholar is infallible.

Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله

ابن الجوزي

وَاعَجَبًا لِمَنْ خَافَ الْمَوْتَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ الْفَوْتَ.

“How astonishing is the one who fears death but does not fear missing out on what truly matters.”

People fear losing their lives while failing to fear losing the opportunity to prepare for the Hereafter.
